Hugo Navarrete Zambrano

Dr. Hugo Navarrete, director del Herbario QCA, Universidad Católica del Ecuador, graduated in 2001 at the Universidad Católica. He worked within the Danish-Ecuadorian Enreca programme and is an expert on Neotropical ferns and mountain forest ecology. He has directed the herbarium since 2001 and teaches systematic botany at the university. He coordinates the Tropical Forest Dynamics project at the Yasuni Research station which is funded by the American Mellon Foundation in collaboration with Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. He supervises 5 thesis students in taxonomy and ecology of various Ecuadorian plant groups.

Education

1997–2001  Earned, Ph.D. on Biological Sciences, through the Department of Biological Sciences, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador.

1989–1994  Earned, “Licenciado en Biología”, through the Department of Biological Sciences, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador.

 

Profesional experience

2002–         Associate Teacher in the Department of Biological Sciencies, Catholical University in Quito.

2001–         Director of the QCA Herbarium at the Department of Biological Sciencies, Catholical University in Quito.

2001–         Scientific and technical advisor for the project “ Studies on the dynamics of the Yasuní Forest”. A cooperation project between PUCE, STRI, Aarhus University and Field Museum of Natural History.

1999–2000  Evaluation of the conservation status of Ecuadorian endemic vascular plants.

1998–1999  Teacher of the Pteridophytes section of a General Botany course, at Catholical University in Quito.

1995–2000  Visits to AAU Herbarium (Aarhus, Denmark), to identify fern specimens. Eigth to twelve weeks period each year.

1994–1998  Researcher in the Center for Research on the Cultural and Biological Diversity of Andean Rain Forest (DIVA).

1990–1993  Asistant curator of the pteridophytes section of the QCA Herbarium, Quito, Ecuador.
